I think the driver side head is leaking on the outside but no internal. Is this possible?the oil is clean .the small puddle shows up on the top of the timing cover and looks to be dripping at the corner of the head next to the distributor .at 1st I thought it was the thermostat housing but if it was it should have a puddle on both sides of the timing cover shouldn't it?you can kinda see where it dribbles down from the head and settles in the goove of the timing cover .is this a common problem? before anyone asked about the oil color there is no milking like substance or water on the plugs thanks for any thoughts
It could be the head gasket, but from what you describe its most likely the intake gasket, or t-stat housing. But the best way to find it would be to pressure test the cooling system that way your not just guessing.
Sounds like the intake gasket is leaking where it mates to the head... The part of the gasket that's exposed routes the leaking coolant to the outside of engine vs into oil...
How bad? I just put a new timing cover on, and before I ran it it leaked a bit. Then after I got the engine running for 20 or 30 minutes, the leak has stopped. Mine was a slow drip somewhere around the top of the timing cover... Not sure if heating the engine caused the sealant to seal it or what.
i found out where a coolant leak was on my Aztek by using a UV dye in the cooling system, put it in, ran it to operating temp. and looked around with a small UV light, found it easily and the dye marks the path of the leak very well.
I had that problem with my 302. Everytime I would take it down the 1/4 mile, I'd open the hood in the pits & coolant would be everywhere. I just couldn't figure it out. Only leaked when I put my foot in it at, the track. And couldn't track it down, cause it wouldn't leak any other time. Finally one day, I noticed a small leak on the passenger side head behind the alternator. I pulled the intake, so I could pull the head (figured it was head gasket). That's when I found out it was a small leak on the front corner of the intake. That was a relief & an easy fix... Hopefully that's all that's wrong with yours...
Weep hole leaks on to the harmonic balancer not into the recess of the timing cover... Being it's on the DRIVER side I think Mercurycurser & my suggestions are by far the mostly likely...
Krazy comet and mercurycruisers you guys are probably right I looked again closer and it seems like th eintake is seeping a bit ,its not a big leak but any leak is bad I just really had fluid leaks ,thanks for eveyones input
