Im thinking of upgrading to a 500cfm holley 2bbl, on my stock 73 302 I talked to some one and they said i would have to grind my ports to make them bigger, is this true?.... if soo would a carb spacer do the trick
I don't think your going to get the performance increase you might be relating the 500 cfm to. The first thing you will notice is the throttle response will be less than what you have now. Reason is there is too much more air from the larger size that makes the air speed through the carb into the intake slower. This makes throttle response poor and fuel milage even worse. You are much better off changing to a 4 throat intakes and a 500 cfm 4 throat carb that will be working off two smaller front barrels to keep the air speed up, then the secondary throats open as the engine can use the extra air. This is the best of both worlds. With a large 2 barrel you can't change what you end up with. The large 2 barrel carbs have a use but only for some racing applications where low speed response is not much concern and race rules call for only 2 barrel carbs to be used.
Spend a little more $ and just change over to a 500 CFM 4 bbl carb and manifold. The 500 CFM 2 bbl is a toilet bowl. All you'll do is flush your gas down the motor. MPG will suck and you will most likely get a big bog off idle acceleration. Too much CFM too soon.
I agree; ditch the 500cfm 2bbl. idea. Your stock carb will actually perform better off-the-line. Do it right & get a 4-barrel intake & carb...It's a very noticable improvment in performance...
Now if ya wanna get real serious, I have this Mustang 5.0 efi intake, plenum, injectors and throttle body for sale.
Hmmm EFI ? Well i wouldnt mind converting to EFI.... I sent u a PM bob I will check into it see whats got more bang for the buck... converting to a 4bbl or EFI... I will spend more on a EFI to a point
I'm told that the intake up will just bolt on to the 302 heads, but I don't have any plumbing or fuel pump. You will need a return line to the tank, EFI harness (SVO), the computer, air cleaner and most likely other small stuff. I have never used this system so I'm not sure about the condition of the injectors or sensors on the manifold assy. I was gonna change over to a V8 and add the efi, but I changed my mind and will build a hot 6 to tease the V8 guys. I want $100 + Shipping to anyone here that might want it. It's just to high teck for me right now.
I would take that bout the other parts would cost me an arm and leg probably i wouldnt know what to get
The guys from SVO can tell ya. They show up at Goodguys and many other car shows, but I haven't researched it like I should. I bought this on a whim to change over and reality (for me) told me to back off. I have three other projects going at this time and the Maverick is a good driver as is. Good night all, gotta get some shut eye now. I'll log on again tomorrow.
The 500cfm 2 barrels are meant for racing classes that don't allow 4 barrel carbs. They are not a good street carb at all. Your mileage and everyday performance will probably drop, and that factory 2 barrel manifold won't flow anyway.
