Hi guys. New to the forum and new to these cars.

Just picked up a 74 comet and the first thing I want to address is the way the bumpers protrude from the car.
is there a way to shorten the bracketed to make them look like they were not an afterthought. :)

    Welcome,
Always good to see another Comet guy.

You might want to look into the one-year-only 73 front bumper .... those look great tucked. Not sure if they use the same frame brackets, though. You would want a valance pan with that bumper.

Look at a lot of tucks, either way. A minor tuck looks good, but it is possible to go too far. Another issue is that the bumpers start crowding the marker lights. If thinking of painting the bumpers to match the body color, an option is to shorten the sides of the bumper.

A lot of guys convert to the earlier thin bumpers, but that gets involved ... the whole back of the car changes (shorter fender caps, adapting Mustang frame mounts inside the trunk) and you need to source valance pans are just a few items on that list.

Welcome! One of the first things I did with my Maverick was to source the parts for a small bumper conversion. The big bumpers did not look that bad but I really like the small bumper look, the car is now about 12 - 18 inches shorter than it was with the big bumpers. If i had the skills, I would have considered a bumper tuck. The only draw back is that the bumpers are now strictly ornamental.

we slammed the bumper on our 74 it looked pretty good since that 500 pound bumper made the front end sag giving it just the right rake

isnt it amazing what a can of $1 spray paint and moving some bolts can do?
