well I removed the pistons from the block and the crank look great. The pistons looked like they were marred by something and thats what caused the gouges on the right side. So, I will buy the Mahle pistons and re-use the rods and get the bores 010 more to get the 40 over I talked to my machine shop and they said that should be ok. So guys sound off, tell me what you think about my options, I do have another 302 stock bore block that I could have 30 over, but I would like to salvage my 30 over block by boring 10 more to get 40. That way I could save stock bore block for a stock rebuild.
Just out of curosity, did you file fit the rings? Must always make sure the four corners on the ring gap, are filed back smooth after initial file fit. If not this can cause cylinder wall scratching etc. Years back I started washng the cylinders with hot soapy water after all the machine work was done and ready for assembly. After rinsing, take a clean white lint free cloth and wipe each one again to see if I got all the dirt, oil and grit out. Have had to do it many time's over in some cases, to get them perfectly clean. Proper piston to bore clearance is another factor, have run lot's of SRP's and never had any problems with them as you describe. I also pre fit the pin in the piston to make sure it is nice and free. If not, a little emery cloth in the bore and some fine polishing on the pin should help. I also us a mix of 10w30 Valvoline and Lucas additive, for a good coating of lube on pins, rings and piston skirts. Just some things I have done over the years and seem to work for me.
Agree with OLD GUY! I am not sure who did what work, I would want my machine guy to show, explain what happened here. Not knowing the full story, it's hard for me to say. Your shop should be able to see what happened, if not, have a couple others look at them. I would want to know why the engine failed cause 2 times are who bunches worse then one time. Good luck, I been in that boat.
