engine vin

    I bought an engine recently and was wanting to know what its vin said. Anyone got a good vin decoder?

    Depends on what it came out of as to what vehicle you will be decoding. Post the numbers here. Generally though, the VIN on the engine is only going to tell you what model year vehicle it came out of, as well as what plant the car it came in was built at, and the consecutive unit number of that car. So you can figure out what it was originally from with reasonable doubt by figuring out what vehicles were being produced at that plant during that model year.

    You can also figure out the exact day the engine was originally built by looking for the code which is just in front of the left head. on part of the deck surface that extends out. The pic below shows what I'm talking about.

    Of course if the deck surface of the block has been machined at any point, this number may have been machined off with it. It will be a number followed by a letter an then two more numbers.
