running problems

    hey all been a while just purchased a 76 6banger it starts and idles fine but when u start driving it down the road it backfires and starts poping acts like its out of fuel but i know its not what might it be?

    i would try a carb rebuild first. change the fuel filter at the same time. also if the gas in the car is old that could do it too.

    put fresh gas in it and change the filters is there a screne in the tank on the pickup tube ?

    there is susposed to be a "sock" type filter on the pick up tube in the tank. its usually not a problem. they will fall a part and clog up the main filter before they get cloged up. get a rebuild kit for the carb and really clean the all the passages as best as you can.
