I remembered that I have a guy that owns a machine shop that owes me... I could set these up on a boring mill and take 1/4" or 1/2" out of the inside face and increase the backspacing, and test out the fit prior to buying a new set of rims. Any ideas if that would weaken the rims beyond their ability to be driven on safely.
Cragars are not the strongest wheel on the market I don't think it would be safe to do if you was just using them to test fit that might be ok but I wouldn't run them. I have seen them break on big block cars.
I agree. Very risky. As a matter of fact, I would not machine material from any wheel regardless of who makes it.
If you are only removing 1/4"-1/2" to test fitment, can't you just "see" that without removing wheel material? Have you tried your fitment with one of these: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/php-01201 Or even better: http://www.wheelworksinc.com/
I assumed those fitment tools were more expensive than that. Yes, increase backspace. I need to pull the wheel in a bit so it isn't rubbing on the fender. If I did it, I would not be driving on it for long. Just enough to get home and order the right sized rims.
Yep. Would be sabotage to sell them after that mod and the money lost by forcing those wheels into the scrap pile would exceed the cost of the tool.
No, no, and no. Safety is not something you want to jack with. I see allot of people mess with stuff on their Rock Crawlers and end up breaking somewhere. I had a friend almost lose his life because of modifying his suspension.
Scooper, if you're going to ruin the rims, Ill pay pal you some $ and ship them to my house. I can at least put them to use...
