Me too - on a 1980 AMC Eagle. When the water pump was replaced, the mechanic put the fan on backwards. The derelict couldn't figure out why the vehicle continued to overheat, even after his repair.
so i found out the previous owner did a cheap radiator leakstop stuff from napa, so it explains some of the discoloration. when i pulled off the water pump it had a thick sandy brown stuff inside of it. the bearing on the water pump seemed to be fine but i did run the car for a little while and part of the flow on the waterpump was bone dry like it hadnt ran. ill let you guys know more in a few days when i put the new water pump on. thank youeveryone for the help and opinions on what the problem may be. ill let you guys know if it works thank you.
So good news is I got the water pump replaced flushed the system several times and am running water with a prestone radiator and cooling system cleaner The car stays at 190-195 now. I'm very happy its running great. I have one more flush to do before I add real coolant not just water and the cleaner. Thank you everyone for the help!!!
i just wanted to give you guys a good update. ive been driving the car almost daily. i drove it out highway 36 and gave it a true test. the car started to over heat with the good size hills and constant slowing down and speeding up. so i am glad to say i have the heating problem fixed
