I bought a 1971 Comet Gt that was gloss black under the hood, I bought a one owner 72 GT that was satin black under the hood and a one owner 72 comet that was tan with tan under the hood.
Were you the original owner of the 71? Maybe we're not all on the same page. The thread started w/paint in the engine compartment" and somehow got injected w/ "under-hood paint" color. I am referring to engine compartment/firewall. I can't recall any original new cars w/ engine bay painted gloss black in the 60 & 70's.
I ordered it in Feb. 71 and received it April of 71and it was gloss black on the underside of the hood and engine compartment was also gloss black. The 72 GT was a one owner never painted and it was a green with green under side of the hood with satin black engine compartment. The 72 Comet was tan with tan under the hood and engine compartment. It is now my blackGT clone.
Thanks for the info on the 71 - you learn something everyday. I suppose manufactures used whatever they had to keep production moving. Dave Boyer mentioned the fact, some cars came gloss in the engine compartment but wasn't sure if he meant our vintage cars or newer vehicles.
My 74 maverick was grabber blue as well as the engine campartment, the 72 maverick and the 71 torino was black under the hood
Black looks just as good, and any body-color other than black is hard to keep looking clean. Early Mavericks had black engine compartments (like Mustangs) and later models all had body-color. I don't know what year it was switched to body-color. Maybe Craig knows.
I had a white '71 body shell that was body color under the hood. This had been a relatively low mileage all original car before a previous owner tore it apart. Sorry these pics are terrible, but they are all I have of it.
