R-12 is the factory refrigerant. Get out your check book.

You may want to look into converting it to 134a.

Can you even still legally obtain 12?

Just buy a drop in replacement for R12 if you are just looking to recharge a factory stock system. Loads of them out there. R12 isn't worth what is was, and anyone that pays a premium for it, is wasting their money.

I would convert to 134a. R12 would be good but if you already need some then you have a leak. My Maverick was already converted when I got it. It took 1.7 lbs of 134a last time I vacuumed and recharged it. I have 2 leaks at the bottom of my condenser coil. The conversion kits are reasonable if you shop around and its very easy to do. Not as good as R12 but does the job here in Arizona.

Well I dont know if there is a leak. Im going to have it checked and if there is not a leak im going to have them fill it with either hotshot or whatever the recommended drop in is. Im just trying to find out what would be best to use to charge the original system if I dont have to change it. If I do have to change it what is the usual cost of a conversion kit?

Just go to your local auto parts shop, Oreillys, Autozone, Advance, Napa, whatever is in your area. they sell the boxed conversion kits for around $40. only thing else you need to do it right is borrow a vaccum pump and gauge assembly from the store if they loan them out.

Freeze 12 works exceptionally well, have had it in couple of my vehicles that originally had R12. Just have to have the system vacuumed down and then recharge with the Freeze 12, that's it. On an '89 Chevy pickup I had, the temp at the vent was in the low 40's in a 95 degree shop after recharging with it.
