    Gas tank is broken?
Do you mean the fuel gauge is not reading?

IF so, it is possible that it is your sending unit.
I would be hesitant to use someone else's estimate
for how far you can go on a tank of gas. It greatly
depends on your car, motor, tuned condition, etc.
Ex. a carb in need of rebuilding will perform poorly on mileage.
Or a car in need of a tune-up will get poor mileage. Driving
conditions have a big impact as well as altitude, speed etc.
You only disclose that you are in the US, altititude has an
impact on mileage relative to tuning.

    Best of luck.

Just fill the tank, record the mileage on the odometer, drive it around until you think that you used about 1/2 to 3/4 of the tank, then when you fill it up record the amount of gallons of gas it took and the new odometer reading. Then just get the miles driven (2nd odometer reading-1st odometer reading) and divide by the #gallons of gas used to get miles per gal (mi/gal or mpg).

While a Chilton's will help in many ways, there isn't much about the sending unit.
