Headers Wraps

    What do you think about Headers Wraps to contain the heat on it.

    What are the pros or cons of wrapping your headers?

    Have you done this to your headers?

    This is based on what I read not what I have done.
    Pros
    Less heat which means more efficient power and less strain on the parts that are close to the headers which are effected by heat.
    Cons
    Wraps can trap moisture and cause the headers to rust out

    I have my headers wrapped. Pro's: less heat under hood, keeps heat in pipes to help spool turbo. Cons: holds water which rust pipes out faster.

    We used header wrap on our over the top headers on past circle track stock cars - the pros was the wrap prevents most of the heat from eminating out out from the tubes so more of the heat flows out the pipes giving you greater velocity - also keeps you from burning your hands working around the spark plugs on a hot engine - the cons I fiound was one time we had a power steering leak with fluid hitting the wrap and it ignited into a nice little fire under the hood :)

    Headers Wrap ??

    Hello Sonora:
    Have you considered Ceramic Coating ?? We've done six cars with the coating and it does a good job keeping the heat down and a lot neater ..not to mention the improved appearance. We get them done here in Florida (Orlando) for $175.00 per set without shipping. I wish you success.

    Chip, the fact is when I was looking for my headers (6901) I saw the ceramic coated and was too expensive to me, so I decided to buy the cheap set then I heard about the thermic tape and I start to investigate about that because in my city the summer its "too long" with high temperatures, I have no AC on my Mav, so you can feel the heat very well (hahaha).

    The ceramic coated in your city is cheap and accessible (Y)

    considering your location rust may not be an issue. Is it dry there? if so id say go for the wrap.

    I HIGHLY recommend header wraps and they can even affect the optimum tuning requirements(more main jet and less cam overlap/exhaust duration requirements) because of the benefits mentioned above.

    The big trick with making wrap last is to coat the headers with better quality paint to begin with(some of the factory stuff is so damned cheap it flakes off in the box or during assembly).. or at least add some more hi-temp paint over the existing coating after some minor prep(remove loose paint and solvent wipe).

    Then follow the wrapping process with a double dose of hi-temp silicone sealer to help keep the moisture out. Also never good to do much wrapping onto.. and especially past the collectors.. if you drive the car in rain a lot because those areas cool much faster/become water saturated/dry out slower than the primary pipes which are stuffed up into the much more element protected and hotter engine bay.
