Goood afternoon maverick/ comet experts. When I went to start my 72 comet, it turned over but sounded awful, I could smell electrical smoke and noticed it rising from the solenoid. I went ahead and replaced the solenoid and the problem persists. To the point where I turn the key and it cranks, and when I turn the key off it continues to crank for a few seconds?! Smoke still there. I noticed the black/ orange fusible link looks pretty awful, could this be my problem- if so does anyone know what gauge of wire to use for the yellow fusible link? Where I can get a replacement? The black/ orange link says 16 gauge- should they be the same? Thanks in advance!

Should be the same. At my work we build automotive wiring harnesses, among other things. The fusible links are 2 AWG sizes smaller than the wires they protect. That way they heat up and open first. You need to figure out why yours overheated.

Thanks! Well my car completely overheated to the poor if blowing a freeze plug, so I imagine that was what did it? The problem started right after that happened. Today I replaced the fusible link and there was no more smoke however I couldn't get her to turn over. Any ideas on what else might have been affected electrically by the high heat? I may post a video of the sound being made when I try and start her- thanks again!

I actually already replaced the starter solenoid the other day, that was my first step, and their is definitely power as the dash lights are coming on and everything, do it would seem the batt cables are ok? Any other ideas, I'm doing my best to avoid towing her to a shop to pay 100 for them to tell me almost nothing -_-

The yellow wire feeds the fuse panel. Check the headlight switch to see if it's defective.

On the battery side of the starter solenoid, there should be a 16 gauge fusible link protecting the feed to the fuse panel. This should be a yellow wire. You may not see it if only the fusible link is exposed before it enters the taped up wire loom. This loom usually contains the wire for the "I" terminal , the wire for the "S" as well as all the wires for the voltage regulator. It then runs down and under the battery tray where it picks up various light ckts and continues on under the rad and eventually ends up at the fuse panel picking up additional ckts along the way. Me personally, I would remove the tape as far back as necessary to inspect for damage to the wires. If they got hot enough, some may have melted the insulation allowing cross feeding or no connection at all.
