I have a ford 8 inch in my 75 merc comet but it has 2.79 gears. What is the best ratio for all round crusing and gettin' of the line...

i like 3.25 if you dont have an overdrive transmission. they give a noticeable increase off the line and you can still go 70mph on the freeway with out the motor reving to high.

:agreed: - the 3.25 would be a real wake up with the automatic transmission.

The stock 3.00 that came with a manual transmission car would be a step up too and pretty easy to find.

I swapped my 2.79 to a 3.00 and it made a big difference in off-line pick up...increased mpg's too. I'm going to swap to a 3.25 now that I have a manual overdrive transmission

check out the DPI Platinum Track torsen/worm gear unit
I'd also do 3.25 max if no O/D
mine came with 3.00 stock since mine originally had the 250i6

3.55's if you have an 8" and an OD tranny.
