Okay guys I need some help. My 73 Comet threw a rod and now I need to get a new engine. I am nowhere near experienced enough to rebuild an engine. Anyone have a great resource? A helpful comment? Anything? 1973 Comet 200cid straight 6 engine
im not very familiar with the inline 6 motors... immediately swapped mine to a 302. but heres a clip from a wiki article about the motor. maybe it'll help you find a donor car. "The 200 was used in the Ford Maverick and Mercury Comet models, and continued in the Ford Fairmont and Mercury Zephyr until the Fairmont and Zephyr models were retired at the end of the 1983 model year and replaced with the Ford Tempo and Mercury Topaz. The Ford Granada and Mercury Monarch offered the 200c.i. I-6 as part of their engine lineup from 1975 to 1982 when they were replaced in 1983 by the Ford LTDand the Mercury Marquis. These two models used the engine from 1983 to 1984 when it was replaced by the 3.8L Essex V6." You COULD swap in a 250cid. not sure what it takes to do that hopefully someone with more I6 experience will chime in here. or you could swap in a 302. plenty of info on that swap on the forum.
I wanted to explore my options - since the engine is out anyway. I called Jasper - hey don't even have one in stock, they'd have to rebuild from my core. I'm going to explore my options on this. All the help I can get is greatly appreciated.
250 uses different front exhaust pipe (taller/longer), different engine mounts, and a different bell housing and torque converter, etc. Probably not worth the added grief to go the 250 route. Lots of 200's around, in different cars, too. Falcon, Mustangs, Mavericks, Comets, Fairmonts, Zephyrs, etc as previously mentioned. If I were you, I'd search the "For Sale" section in the Forums and maybe even post an ad in the "Wanted" section. Always lots of people swapping out 6cyl's for V8's. Should be pretty cheap/reasonable.
glad someone chimed in with the inline 6 know how. i agree the 200 came in ALOT of cars. shouldn't be hard at all to find a good used engine. for a decent price too. definitely worth replacing over rebuilding at the price you can get a motor for.
you will have 2K+ in the 200 when done. if you find a $250 pull out 200 how far could you trust it? you are in a bad spot...upgrading would put you as much if not more. but a stock to mild 302 would give you 3 X the motor.
I would recomend learning to rebuild the engine. These are simple ,can be costly while learning ,but its priceless when you master the build. You can pass down the knowledage
"threw a rod and now I need to get a new engine." doesn't sound like an ...engine rebuild...more like an...engine replacement...
Agreed, any engine that's tossed a rod probably has sustained enough internal damage to transform it into a boat anchor... Block is often busted, cylinder gouged at least to point of needing sleeved, crank scored beyond salvage etc...
Would help to post your location, there are several guys on here that prolly have what you need in their "warehouse" and other locals that may be willing to help...
