Glad to see this site is still going strong. I think I joined around 2012 or so, when I was looking to find a Maverick to relive the one I had in my youth (it was my favorite out of all the cars I ever had). I actually came pretty close last year, but then our house was torn up from a tornado. Now, the VA is telling me that my lower back is getting worse (service-connected disability) and I may have rheumatoid arthritis. I don't know how this will affect me trying to find and restore a car, but as of right now, I'm still looking for a Maverick project. I've caught up on a lot of reading here and notice that money issues are causing a few people to get out of the hobby. I feel your pain, as I live on disability and a few odd jobs- I find that even getting back into the hobby is a challenge with my limited funds. I hope those of you facing the possibility of selling can find an answer to keep your rides. As for me, I'm going to keep looking for that early builder and hope the money part of it works out. Medical conditions aside, I don't plan to give up! Off topic- any of you going to the James Dean car show in Fairmount, IN or the Ducktail Run show in Gas City, IN this weekend?
Outside of these forums, I always 'window shop' using www(dot)adhuntr(dot)com. It allows you to search ALL of Craigslist, and even Kijiji to find Mavericks and Comets without typing "Maverick" into each and every city on Craigslist. It can be a powerful tool, and there's LOTS of good cars out there. Also remember to check out the Maverick & Comet Auctions, Craigslist, etc Forum for interesting Mavs/Comets that people here come across on-line. All the best with your health, and Maverick search!
I will be running around there Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. My band performs Friday afternoon in Fairmount (downtown). No Maverick....just walking around.
I am also watching the internet for a Maverick project car, I still have two cars in front of a Maverick project but if I can find a great deal I would go ahead and get the Maverick. I took my 57 Chevy to the James Dean show about 20 years ago, had a great time but was surprised that nothing went on after the sun went down. I used to be a really big James Dean Fan, in fact my 57 is called The Bitch and I am going to name my Maverick "Little Bastard" Charlie
I think you have to be at the Ducktail Run show in Gas City for things to be going on after dark. The James Dean show is dying a slow, drawn-out death...
That's sad about the James Dean show. My uncles go there every year. I would still like to take my 57 up there if I ever get it finished.
James Dean car show in Fairmount, IN----- I usually go to the meet. I had reservations to go this year but cancelled cuz I had to many things going on at home. Also, didn't feel like drving 20-30miles to the motel after a long day. There were 2 folks there last year w/ Comet/Mavericks, Ken Ellis who hosted the Gathering this year and myself. Ken cud'nt go this year because he had knee surgery.
Ken and I was there last year parked together. He has a blue maverick, I have a red Comet. Don't know how u cud have missed us. I believe I left early on Sunday - what day were u there? We were only at the James Dean show.
We were in Fairmont Saturday with our '79 T/A (my Maverick has 4.11 gears and 26" tall tires - 65 mph across Ind 26 from Lafayette would have had the stock 302 screaming!) I met a gentleman from Ohio with his awesome looking 289/5 speed Comet (also a MaverickComet Club member) but his name eludes me again. We were entry 1135 and a steady stream of cars came in all day long. If you were wandering around the show our light blue T/A was parked next to my friend's '65 red/silver AMC convertible, which was next to a maroon '64 GTO which was next to my other friend's yellow '55 Studebaker street rod kind of like this picture from a different show.
Nice T/A - with all of the black & gold ones, that I see at the car shows, yours stand out with it being blue
I was there most of the day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Had a blast. James Dean show in Fairmount is coming back. Lots going on in Fairmount up until Midnight. Duck Tail is the bigger show....bigger swap meet. I saw MCCI member tom Browning from Ft. Wayne. wish I would have known you were down Bruce...it has been too long. This is my first time on the mmb since Friday morning....that's how busy I was this weekend.
Thank you Bob. Now that I've learned how to clean it up and make it really shine it is getting a lot more attention. Then when people learn we are the original owners it really perks up the conversation. Craig, if I had known you had a gig at the Duck Tail I would have made it there to see you perform. To get back on the OP's plight, I found my Maverick on RacingJunk.com about three years ago. It is my fourth one in 41 years and I've equipped it with the 4 speed, 9" 4.11 rear end and manual steering from my first car with a lot of time in between cars waiting for this one. Keep looking! Bruce
