If you can swing it get an AOD out of an old police interceptor, or any trans with OD It will help balance out a higher gear.

The installation of a ring and pinion gear requires the use of crush sleeves on the pinion gear. You crush it too much, remove and start over. It also requires a certain wear or contact pattern where the ring and pinion engage each other. If you want to do it yourself, get the proper tools for adjusting the carrier in the pumpkin and a book on how it should be done.

the best deal is to go on ebay. their is a guy on there that sells fresh built complete 3rd members with what ever ratio you want, a limited slip and new bearings for around $800. you really cant beat that price and you have your old third member to be able to sell or rebuild or keep in reserve to swap back in for a long road trip.

So I should just go with an AOD then. I will for sure make sure I have all the things needed if I do it my self. I'm trying to learn as much as I can. What is the guys name on ebay? In all of your guys opinion what would be the best gear ratio for me.... I drive it in the city for the most part, and speeds are around 45-65 but she does see the high way some. And I want something that is going to be able to be on the high way so I can come show it off to you guys when I am all done.

Honestly....for what you want to do with the car.....just leave the rear-end alone.

So just leave the 2.79 in it? But I fell like it does not give me enough kick as I would like. I mean it switches into to 2nd at like 10 mph.

Switching gears would just make that worse if that is what is happening. Switching gears would also make the gas mileage get worse. If this car is your daily driver I see no need to switch other than personal preference. You main gain some "kick".....but what you lose is far more in my opinion.

What motor are you working with?

Got disc brakes yet? You need to be able to stop before you can "go".

Unless you are going to take the car to a drag strip on a regular basis.....in your situation....I would keep with the factory rear gearing.

If you do mostly city driving then you "could" actually improve your fuel economy by changing to a lower gear ratio (numerically higher). Your highway mileage will suffer though.
