My transmission in my 77 maverick is going bad and I'm in the market to get a new one. I found a transmission out of a 70' maverick with a 170ci engine, I wanted to know if it would fit properly onto my 77' 250ci engine?
You don't say if it is standard or Auto if it is standard the bell will unbolt and they can be interchangeable If the bell is the same depth ! With the Auto there were different styles of converter used on the 6 engines and the one for the 170 may not match the depth of your 250 ! The 170 and 250 do not have the same bolt pattern so the bell has to be changed to match your engine!
Im sorry I completely forgot to mention that the trans is auto. So your saying in order for it to fit on my 250 i would need to get a bell matching that of the 170?
Has that ever been proven?? The 1969 price list for Mustang lists the 6cyl auto for 200 & 250 at same price, while the one for 302 & 351 were approx $10 higher... As far as a '70 trans working, the 250 bell and converter would have to be swapped to the 170 trans, that I'd think was lighter duty than one for a 250...
I heard the 250-302 C4 has one more clutch than the 170-200 C4. The extra clutch requires a deeper drum.
I took a look at the shop manual to see if I could find out something useful for this thread. It does not break down the C4's by application (engine size) - just by the tag code. The 170 had the lowest RPM torque converter. As for the transmission itself, PEB and PEG (the semi-auto included here) have 1 less clutch plate, different servos, different shift points. I would assume all designed for the weaker engines. The PEA - PEE - PEF were the C4's made for more powerful engines. And you can't lump the 170 /200 together all the time on this one. I had a PEE on my 1972 200. Another Ford thing I guess.
Here are a couple fun charts - I've found charts like these to be nice guides but not always 100% correct. 1965-1972 http://fordification.com/tech/transapps_65-72cars.htm 1973-1979 http://www.fordification.net/tech/transapps_73-79cars.htm
There is no question about the fact that a 250 and 302 use a different C4 than a 170 or 200 but it is also a fact that you can use a 170 tranny behind a 250 and not have a problem! I bought a 1982 mustang with a 200 6 with a C5 , I replaced the engine with a 302 and a high stall converter and a C4 valve body with a shift kit! I run that tranny for 2 seasons with no problems, That tranny had 3 frictions in one clutch and 4 in the other ! The car run 13.2 at 103 mph, If a stock 6 cylinder box will handle that you could go a long way under normal driving with out a problem!
Thanks for the links, appears the 250 & 302 C4 do have similar internals... My '71 GT parts car with 200 has a PEB-H... Dunno about '72 never looked at it, though I know Brian put it back in place after the rebuild...
According to the chart, the 200 Maverick in 1972 has a PEB. My car is a Dearborn car, and they may have just used what they had at the time. According to the charts they did use PEE with a 200 in the Fairlane and Torino.
