As i was removing the bearing and ring from this axle i some how managed to cut into the axle itself a bit Is this axle ruined?
If you plan on hitting the rear tires with some real torque...I would replace it. You have created a place for stress to concentrate itself and make the axle crack. You cut past the factory case hardened steel at the surface. If it were just a nick, it would be fine but its not. Heres a little tip for you next time you have to do this and dont have a press handy to help you...Only cut into the locking collar about half way. Then put a good sharp chisle in the cut and smack it with a hammer...The ring will split and you can remove it by hand.
Thanks for the tip, thats what i was able to do on the other one and didnt have a problem cracking it off the axle but for some reason this one didnt want to get off that easily. Was hard for me to see how deep i was going, didnt think i was going that deep. Recommendation on a place to buy a new one? I seem to be having trouble finding one for an 8inch rear
My 9 inch that came stock out of a Granada has 2 different length axles - I'm thinking that your 8 inch rear also does
you should be fine. i see that on lots of axles that ive taken bearings off of. your axles should be different lengths. you will need to get a custom made axle or find a good used axle if you want to replace it. dutchman would be a good source for a new custom axle if you want to get one.
thanks for chiming in! i really value your opinion and info. Im going to give it a shot and keep em. Hopefully i dont have to annoy you guys for awhile lol
no annoyance here. this board is all about helping each other. if people didnt ask questions this site wouldnt exist. so dont hold back. ive also found the people like to just see what we are doing with our cars and love to see pics of what we are doing. so keep posting!
