I have herd two different things A) I need to use break in oil when firing up a rebuilt motor B) Just put zinc additive in the motor oil of your choice (which I have done) after I resolved my fuel delivery issue several months ago my project has been collecting dust because of college and work, I'm revisiting this stage of my build so that I have everything in place so I can finally try to start it again and break in the cam properly once and for all. I have 5w30 Pennzoil and a full bottle of Lucas zinc additive in the motor, I think I may swap to 10w30 once its on the road.
Yes you need break in oil hopefully you used a good cam/lifter assembly lube such as ZPaste or Joe Gibbs Drivin Use a break in specific oil like joe gibbs offers Do the usual 20 min break in at 2500rpm for cam
Cant just put zinc additive in with off the shelf oil as that oil forumlation has calcium. Which essentialy strips any metal to metal cushion.. After breakin either or weight toy mentioned will work well But thinnest oil to give you 10 lbs per 1k rpms would be best
http://www.drivenracingoil.com/dro/br30-break-in-oilhtml/ Then just switch to their hr2 or hr4 oil after 400 or 500 miles Id personaly run the br30 just long enough for cam breakin then switch to their hr2...then switch to hr4 or amsoil zrod after 1k if you prefer synthetic
Absolutely - I picked up my Cleveland from my engine builder with 7 quarts of Joe Gibbs break in oil in the pan
The main thing to succeed in proper breakin is if you have dual valve springs, remove the inner spring while doing the cam breakin Then reinstall inners after
