im relatively new to wiring and was wondering if anyone had experience with using a relay to control a cig lighter. I have it currently wiring to a constant 12v w/inline fuse but id like to wire it to only be on when the ignition is on. Could i wire it to the ignition stud on the solenoid and experience no problems? or is there an even easier way? i am not opposed to installing a relay. I could use the relay to control an aftermarket gauge light as well.

Just trigger the relay with the radio power wire, it's close by.

Is there something wrong with the existing blue/white wire for the lighter or are you trying to add an extra socket as a charger for your phone? Originally the lighter is hot all the time.

As for your gauge lights, again, why not tap into the existing blue/red wire for interior lights. This way it would be controlled by the dimmer. As long as you are not adding too many bulbs, this should not be an issue. There should be a plug accessible for the ash tray light.

Just try not to butcher up your harness. People often cause more problems for themselves by poorly tapping into their harness.

Going to the solenoid is taking the long way to get to the same point. If you are looking for an alternative power source, I would look at the accessory feed: http://mmb.maverick.to/threads/factory-accessory-wire-feed.19133/

Not all cars came with a lighter but do have the wiring for it.

Remove the entire lighter housing from the dash. Knock out the round plug at the back. Install the lighter assembly. Connect to the blue/white wire that should be right there. Reassemble. Done.

I'd use the orig, always hot wiring and add a switch if you're uncomfortable with it always being on, would allow charging without ign...
