I am interested in buying a 302 and it comes with a FMX auto trans. Will I be able to put this right it and go or will it not hook up to the rear end? Give me all you can please, thanks.

Depending on where it originated a FMX should be same length as a C4, but could be longer if originally from truck... Be a real good idea to measure it...

I used one from a '69 Torino with 351 in a '67 Falcon along with orig Falcon drive shaft, I did have drill the crossmember mount to relocate it farther reward but was only modification for my install...

Will it fit the narrower 1970 trans tunnel is what I would wonder.

Unless someone on the forum chimes in who has done this swap, you will most likely have to find out by trial fitting it.

I would think most would tell you a C4 would be a better choice.

I will be the first "Most" to tell you. Cast iron transmission is heavy. The C4 is a better transmission

If I am not mistaken, an FMX is cast iron.

A FMX is roughly the size of a AOD, dunno if they'll fit though(never owned a '70 and generally walk a wide path around any 6cyl)... Stock for stock the FMX will handle more torque than a C4, but of course is cast iron(just the case, bell and tail housing are alum) so is likely 50-60Lb heavier... BUT, if that trans is orig to the 302, it's probably built to a lighter duty spec than the one from a 351...

Thanks guys, It is paired with a 85' 302 out of a truck. I have the C4 in right now, but the 302 comes with the fmx trans. I know that the C4 that I have now wont work because it is original to the 200 i6 that I have now, right?

And would it just be better to try and get the 302 and a c4 from a maverick that came with a 302?

Being I'm cheap and often a rogue when dong swaps, if it's the correct length I'd likely try use it, but ultimately it's gonna be your choice...

Your C4 is built with one less forward clutch than the v8 version, still some have used them without issue... At the least you'll need a V8 case fill bell housing and torque converter, plus I'm 90% the FMX flexplate can't be used with the C4 converter... Likely it's a 164 tooth vs 157 for the V8 case fill C4... Possibly it would work with a pan fill C4 as those use the larger flexplate...

So you think I should just measure it and try and see if it fits or get an old c4 out of a 302 maverick? I know I will need the motor mounts and cross members for the switch from I6 to V8.

Whether you use it is your decision, I just tried to present some of the facts... Assuming it fits without major mods and is a known good transmission, should save the leg work of finding a C4, though if I were starting from scratch I'd be lookin' for a AOD(yeah that muddies the water even more as they have their own special considerations)...

A C4 doesn't have to be from a Maverick, other than the manual lever being different for column shift vs floor shift and the case vs pan fill versions(that generally were in trucks) all are similar... Could just as easily use one from a old Galaxie, Mustang, Torino, Granada or 17 other etc(wasn't many models that never used a C4)... Just keep in mind type shifter you're going to use, will make install easier...

Alright cool. Well thanks a lot for the help. I most likely will just go with it then and see how and works and let all of you guys know. From what it sounds like is it wont be bad but there are better options for the future, but thanks for the tips
