could some one Id this transmission for me, been at it all day but no luck, I have been told its from a 1979 f100
this tag does't look like it's factory... any other pics from the transmission, outside as well as inside?
Search the ID number RAT E1, what I found is it's a Dearborn transmission, meaning it was originally used in a Pontiac... Yes Ford sold transmissions to Pontiac, GM didn't have a decent three speed and Pontiac wanted a good transmission... Oops on second look the number may be RAT EL ???
RAT EL It seems to follow from the end of David Kee's 3 speed chart: http://www.davidkeetoploaders.com/3speedidchart.htm He stops at 1972. I have a late 70s Ford truck repair manual at the shop. I can try to look it up this weekend.
Swaping the main shaft that runs through the center of trans requires total disassembly, not exactly a 15 min job... Using a shorter driveshaft would be much easier but because of trans length, you'll probably have to adj pinion angle...
From what I can find it is a medium duty 3 spd that was used in the broncos. Has bigger synchros, etc with the longer case. It's column shift so if your going to floor shift you'll have to figure that one out. - Matt
My top loader is also a long tail version having come out of my 72 Gran Torino Sport along with the Cleveland that is in my car - installed it because it is all a matched driveline - I had a driveshaft from a 460 police car cut down to fit - being that mine was stock in 72, it is the RUG code trans
Four speeds were RUG(early ones HEH), three speeds were RAT... Guessing early three speeds used a different prefix as well...
