The gear reduction starter looks great but did not fix the problem. I have been out of town and finally had a chance to look at the car again today. The reason the engine is sitting to low is that the previous owner skipped installing the 302 frame mounts using only the motor mounts.
I'm not sure which motor mounts are on it. I'm heading to New York for work this week and will be hoping to find the frame mounts at a junkyard. I am probably going to get a new set of motor mounts as well. I figure if I get them from the local parts store and I don't need them it will be an easy return. Cheapest I have found new frame mounts is 110 from http://critesperformanceparts.com
could the centerlink be upside down? in the pic it looks like its curving upward. i dont remember but i think is supposed to curve down from the idler arm.
The center link is approx level to the point passenger inner tie rod connects, then curve downward to the idler...
If either your idler arm or pitman arm is bend that would arch your center link up as the suspension turns
Think you just found your problem. http://www.autokrafters.com/p-1769-frame-mounts-v8-70-77-maverick-71-77-comet.aspx Micah
WOW! Look how close that exhaust manifold is to the lower control arm pocket!!! And those holes should have bolts in them, holding on the frame mounts. Glad to hear you got your problem figured out. Now, just to get some frame mounts and bolts...
I'm hoping to find a set at http://moltsautoparts.com next week or any other New York junk yards. If not I will order a set from http://critesperformanceparts.com/ they are $110.00 plus shipping and the women on the phone said that they come with the mounting bolts.
There is not a belly bar on the car. All of the info I have read in the 302 swap say that it's optional. Unfortunately the frame mounts are not optional.
It may be optional in a swap, but I believe that every V8 car got them. It is actually something you would want to do even if you had a 6.
Good to see you found the problem - it had me thinking how the center link was getting "up" into the pan when, in fact, the pan was coming "down" into the center link
