Hi, guys, I posted earlier on another thread but I may not have given the necessary details. What I would like to do is to STOP the rust (until such time as I can take care of it more permanently) on the Maverick's surface, without damaging the surrounding paint area too much. I mean, I used to use many years ago naval jelly on another car, and it started to eat the paint, and I wasn't ready to tackle the job to the end. All I want to do now is at least to stop the advance of the rust, in quite a few areas on the car's body, but without resorting (right now) to grinding or stripping or wjhat have you. Is thee a product that will safely stop the rust?
Hi Zanti: I recently purchased a 70 Maverick which had extensive rusting on the Top , and Fender areas. I sprayed a generous amount of OSPHO onto the surface to Stop the rust until I could deal with it on a more permanent basis .. I'm in the process of painting the car now and the OSPHO and rust was removed with sanding discs prior to the primer coat on the car. The OSPHO will turn the metal black upon contact so if you're driving your car around you may not want to ugly it up .. Hope this helps. Cometized (Chip)
No really quick/temporary method...What you can try is this...Clean the areas with rubbing compound to remove the rust/stains on the paint. ( If its bad enough the paint will flake off in the affected areas when you rub it out with the compound) then apply some WD 40. It will wear/wash off over time and need constant re-application though. Rust is self propagating once it starts and really needs to be neutralized/removed (Cut out) to stop it. That will require removing paint/metal to do it properly.
there is a clear rust inhibitor in a spray can nowadays I used it on a gas tank to fill holes it works great and can be sanded on and painted on once dried. I forget the name of it and when I went back to walmart I couldnt find it anymore. its something like that new flex seal. that may even help and it sells in clear now I sprayed that stuff all over my floor boards before installing dynomat and water just puddles up on my floor now when it gets wet and doesnt go away unless I vacuum it out or the sun dries it out
In simple terms ...Its like wax but...It is used for putting a shine into dull paint. Any auto parts store will have some form of it on hand.
You might pick up a spray can of Eastwood Rust Encapsulator in the grey or white colour, spray your rusty sections, then after it dries, use a spray can of your vehicle's colour to spray over top. I've done this for a few older neighbours. This will slow down the rust until you get around to doing it properly. M.D.
sand the rust off as much as possible get a small can of rust bullet and spray two coats on the rust let it dry rough it so paint will stick then prime paint but don't get the rust bullet over spray on anything else it is really hard to get off
