I am considering buying a rebuilt head, i have seen one company on the parts store websites that seems to have all of them called sure fire. My question is whether i should buy the head that is actually listed for my 70 maverick (part number 2f65) or a head listed for an 81 ford fairmont (part number 2f66). I have read that all cylinder heads interchange, and i am thinking the one for the 81 will be better due to the fact that is was designed for unleaded fuel. The newer head is also a bit cheaper. Anyone know if a newer head will just bolt on and use my current exhaust/carb/linkage? (my cylinder head is original, the ears for the exhaust are broken off on the end so i am getting an exhaust leak as well, plus the car is using oil, thought for $300 this was better than trying to get mine repaired)
Now it has been years ago, but I got one with the casting number D8BE-6090-BA because I had info that this head had larger valves and flowed better. Since that was 20 years ago, I cannot recall where I got that info from. Maybe these links help: http://www.fordsix.com/castings.php http://www.classicinlines.com/SmallSixSpecs.asp Micah
The later head has larger exhaust valve but also larger combustion chamber... My guess is there would be a greater power loss due to lower compression... Seems I've also heard accessory mounting is different? I'd check to see if early head includes hardened valve seats and if so, that's the choice I'd make... Unless there is a valve stem seal or guide issue with original head, it'll still use oil...
After adding both heads to the cart, it seems nobody actually stocks the old head anymore. I can still get the newer head, however. I know the motor will still use oil, my main issue is with the leaking exhaust manifold. The front and rear ears are broken off and I cannot get a good seal. I figured the motor was all original and it would not hurt to get a fresh head. I would send mine out for rebuild, but with the broken ears I figured replacement was a better option. Right now, after rebates and discounts I can get a rebuilt 1980 head for 200ci engine for $225 shipped. However, if it does not make sense I wont do it.
