im wanting to switch over to a serpentine belt system and was wondering what all is needed to do so, also for those of you who have done this could you please post a pic so i could see how it looks thanks
I am also interested in this. Im having lots of belt slippage with the 3g alternator and v belt setup. Also would be nice to run late model a/c pump
I run a very simple set up. Stock alt, water pump and crank from an H.O. My water pump is std rotation and the pulley is non grooved. The picture is before the 3G upgrade.
I think this is one of the best set ups you can use. I have one in my completed Maverick with a 5.0. I just pulled another system out of an '89 Mustang last weekend to be used in my current project. You will need a reverse rotation water pump. I'm not sure if you will have to replace the timing cover. Remember, at this time, Ford was using some metric bolts. Make sure you bring some wrenches and sockets with you. Get the brackets for the smog pump. You will need those for the pump delete pully. You will want the water pump bolts. Everything else is self evident. It took me about 2 hours at Pick n Pull. Pictures: http://mmb.maverick.to/resources/my-1971-maverick.221/ Micah
I have had a couple of different setups. It all depends on what all items you need to spin with it. That will affect the belt length (obviously) and the routing pattern. Post a picture of your engine and accessories so someone with similar accessories can post a picture of how they set theirs up.
The setup from '86-'91 Grand Marquis, Crown Vic or Town Car use a std rotation, two belt system... Should easy to run a single belt as long as you don't have P/S...
one way I line up pulleys so belts don't slip is I lay a small laser light in the groove of one pulley and shine it to the next one then shim or space where needed i have never had any slippage problems after doing this i am old fashioned i guess i like the looks of the old v belts and pulley serpentine to me is for newer thing a ma bogs
Komet, What is the story with the timing cover. I'm looking to find a '70s block for my other project. Not sure if I have to retrofit the TC with a 5.0 or can use the original 302 and have it all line up with the serpentine. (thought you might know) Static, From my experience, yes, but I would never reuse a water pump. Micah Something from the internet. FYI:
Then you're gonna have a really good time getting it to work, at least if you're using a original type compressor(no serpentine setup I'm aware of is compatible with a original type compressor).. Also the two belt system mounts the alternator on driver side and A/C compressor on passenger... The 5.0 Stangs MK-VII Lincolns and '86-'88 T-Bird/Cougar use a single belt with component location similar to the Mav/Comet... Also be aware the timing cover for a serpentine belt system is approx a 1/4" thicker, without spacer(s) there will be misalignment on original V belt engine...
I took the easy route and reused everything on front of engine from my original 302 on the 5.0... This is my original components mounted on front of 5.0 using 5.0 timing cover... Water pump pulley is too far forward...
That's what I'm running. I had the same issue with the V belt not being able to handle the 3G. Picked up a whole Crown Vic set of pulleys for $40.
