I have owned a 72 grabber 200 l6 manual 4 bult pattern drum Mav for about 7 years, and now i am thinking about to change to a more powerfull engine. What is different between to change to a 250 or to a v8. What must be changed and what is recomended to change. Will a 250 just slip into the 200 motormounts or are the 250 and v8 mounts the same. Are there even any ideas to change to a 250 if you are gona do the swap. Stefan.
Id would not even bother with the 250-6. For all the work you are going to do....You will want the V-8.

The 250 would be a waste of time & money. A 5-lug with front disc brakes should be in the car's future as well.
v8 or youll be asking your self why did I waste my time energy and money just to change to another put put motor if you want a budget performance v8 go to the nearest picknpull or dismantler and pick up a complete 5.0 from any year mustang and stick it in. if you find one with fuel injection you better get the computer and wiring harness and be prepared for a JOB to get it all running. find one with a carb get the maverick v8 frame and motor mounts and youll need a c4 transmission for a v8 and a v8 transmission cross member put all of that along with a bigger aluminum radiator in and youre done until you put disc brakes from a 5 lug car and the 5 lug rearend should be put in or youll be breaking stuff right away and gas mileage would suffer
You are right Crazy Comet, never heard the word Picknpull. Have been study litle about the 250 l6. Seems the hole engine is a litle bit different than the 200 l6. Must change the radiator and the engine wont fit strightly in my old gearbox, so i agree with all of you. Would be stupid if i would swap to a 250. If i change to a v8 will the stock rearaxle stand up for the power or will it break. Not seeking for a monstermotor but better that it will stand for a litle bit extra power so it wont break if searching for more power later.
Not really...but close. Different axle and different axle tube ends and of course different size axle bearings. Same center section.
Ok, so there must be a million of used parts to change to a 5-lug rearend, even here in Finland. Or did the v8 maverick come with the same 4lug pattern as mine. Dont think so, the axle is the same but the v8-mavs had the 5bult pattern?
V8 Maverick were all five lug, as were 6cyl beginning '73... Bearing OD size is different because of housing ends but I think you may be able to use the V8 axles with 6cyl bearing(research to be sure)... Problem is all other Ford vehicles use longer axles, at least in US...
Ok, thanks. The anser come while i was writing. So it wont be so easy to change to a 5lug pattern. Would it be easyer to buy another rearaxle instead of trying to change the old one if even the size of the bearings are different? Im sorry about my writing, it is almost 30 years since i was in school, it must look terrible.
Well buying a complete five lug rear would be the easiest, but I'm guessing they aren't very plentiful in your part of the world? Do you have any shops that could make you new axles? I'd think most driveline shops should be able to build them... Don't be concerned about your grammar, we'll figure it out, often get worse from posters in the US... BTW in spite of everything you've heard, four lug axles aren't the end of the world, every 5.0 Mustang from '79 to '93 used them(well except for '93 Cobra)... My '88 T-Bird in sig uses four lug...
