Just took it out. Now I have no idea about resistors and the like but it looks intact if not a little burnt. What do you think? Does the ac stuff in tje engine bay need to be attached for anything to operate inside the car?
What goes wrong to make them not work? I thought they would be like a bulb and if broken they wouldn't work? Any idea where to get them from? I suppose they are Mustang like????
If you want to get a better look at the whole heat/AC box assembly on a workbench, look at post 74 on this page ... http://mmb.maverick.to/threads/captains-comet.55560/page-4 I got a brand-new replacement fan motor from Rock Auto for some stupid low price ($12 or $14). They had them on clearance. Deals are out there. I am trying to remember, too ... I think there might be a small opening that you could where you can turn the motor over with a tool. If so, you can see if some debris is jamming the motor. If you want to take the fan motor out, pull the center vent out of the dash. After that, you can pop the clips that surround the fan motor. This is probably a real exercise in gymnastics, but getting that whole box out isn't fun either. It is like trying to pull a molar out of a T-rex.... you move the whole thing back and forth an inch at a time until you wiggle it loose. There is very little room around it. Be sure to remove the passenger side kick panel first or you will rip it up.
Thanks mate. Your info and that of the other guys has pumped me up to get stuck into it. Sort the motor and why its stuck and change the core. Thanks guys!
The resistor has been overheated but doesn't mean it's bad... Likely the motor is seized, jammed or shorted, which is why the fuse blows... Unless a resistor contact is touching ground(bare metal) it will not blow fuse... To test the resistor, connect ohm meter between lugs at each end of coil, a reading of more than 5-8 ohms means it bad... Crude test... With motor connected, if it blows fuse on medium and low setting resistor has continuity and is probably OK... I believe you've already performed this one... BTW a burned out resistor will not effect operation on high setting, it's only function is to provide low & medium settings...
Yeah. I placed a hot wire to the pwr wire and the motor sounds jammed. Probably a wrist watch like suggested earlier knowing my luck. Searching for a motor as we speak. Thanks for your time. Will test that resistor too like you said to be sure.
Ford resistors of the era are generally the same electrically, physically can be different... Some do have a additional lug that provides a fourth speed...
Well well well. Frank 71gold was on the money. When he brought up it may be stuck with something like a watch he wasn't kidding. I looked in when the boxx dropped down and found the culprit. A green cigarette lighter! Jammed in good. Got the whole box out and found more things like a carpenters pencil and some sort of leather thingy sitting in the blower wheel well. Took the motor out and tested it and bam, she purrs like a kitten. Found the ground wasn't connected also but that may have come off when manouvring it out. To say I'm bloody happy is an understatement! The plenum looks good but there was a heap of crap in the box as pictured. Suppose this is why we shouldn't park under trees! Took a pic of the drain pipe. Is it supposed to have a small speed nut type thing inside of it? If so why? Last thing. Core looks nice. How do I tell if it leaks or is corroded? Doesn't look to have leaked inside the box or car. Probably hasn't had any water to it for some time though.
Final kill tally. 1 x lighter, 1 x leather thinggy, 1 x pencil, 1 x part of a can opener and one beetle. Core looks to be rooted. Guessing it shouldn't be wet and rusty on the under side?
Ha ha. I thought given someone had put everything else in there they probably found the time to put a speed nut in there too
My guess, it's to prevent back flow of air at highway speeds(creating a dam) or maybe larger crawley things from entering into the plenum... A lot of the later stuff had a pinched end like a duck's bill, no doubt in my mind it's to restrict back flow or entry from outside...
