Well, black to red primer with lots of body colour overspray. I've also checked the 71-72 mustang judging rules which allows red oxide, dark grey or black primer with body colour over spray. With the bottom pinch welds at the rockers being blacked out and painted the same time the black engine bay was done. So I'm going with POR15 with black top coat and body over spray this seems to be as close as I can get to following some type of Ford practise. As for the trunk splatter colour I'm going to follow 72 PPG paint code which can be found at the center bottom of the chart. With 71 being lighter grey and 72 being a darker gray in the trunk according to PPG. Thanks for the help guys.
I would add that you will want to primer the trunk first in grey to get better coverage with the trunk splatter paint.
Looks like I was wrong about the pinch welds. Paul sent me some pictures of his rockers and they are not blacked out on both sides. Looks like Comets and Mavericks did not follow the mustang process.
One thing not mentioned(at least in this thread) about Dearborn cars is they had black engine bays...
Yep my car was built June and had a black engine bay. I did not realise the dark gray splater was so dark, thanks for the trunk pic's.
Funny thing is...My KC built mav did not have any spatter paint in the trunk...It was body color and oxide red primer up in the nooks/crannys. It was a spec order car though so I figure thats' the reason. Dearborn cars seem to be the exception the the rule (Or lack there of) as far as paint practice is concerned. More mustang rules than mav but really neither.
Yep, according to PPG there is a difference between 71 and 72. With 71 being lighter gray and 72 being darker grey in the trunk. If you have one of thoose paint charts from PPG you can find the trunk paint codes along the center bottom of the page. I know alot of people can find the opposite in real life cars which could be because of build dates, plants or even what Ford had on hand that day. Not knowing what my car came with because it's been repainted I'm just going to follow the PPG recomendations. I got into the habbit of research and restoring to Ford factory practice when I owned a 68 Shelby. For me I find doing some of the research fun part of the hobby. This forum is the best place to find examples of original cars and what Ford did, much easier restoring a mustang.
