Hey guys I just have a wuick question. What is the stock horsepower on a 77 Ford Maverick 302 ? and have you done anything fun in the snow with them? Thanks, Steve
The information I found list the stock HP for a 1977 Maverick / 302 at 137 - 138 HP. I used to have a ball in the snow with my Mavericks. They had lousy traction but were great fun to do donuts with. Those were the good ole' days. They are both retired from winter driving now.
Sounds like fun i want to do donuts in the snow so bad but im afraid for how old the car is i might just break something. here is colorado the snow is gone now all it does is rain so i still have fun just by punching it around the corners and drift them with my one tire smoking. lol anyways thanks guys Thanks, Steve
Its a controlled skid. There is actually a sport now that does this. Kinda dumb in my opinion but hey, to each his own.
Its 2 cars trying to do the same thing as in getting sideways... They use them stupid ricers for most part.. I love to get it going around corners and stuff but as far as making it a sport I dunno about all that... I seen something on TV no to long ago about how its huge in japan or something.
I own one of thoughs rice things. But what would be really awsome would be a Maverick professional D1 Drifter. Can you just se that now drift a whole corner and stuff, it would be great. Thanks, Steve
As far as I've read there's never been a manufacturer that advertised RWHP. The 302 made 129 HP advertised at the flywheel in the later model Mavericks. Now if you have heard there was a horsepower rating change there was, in 1972 it went from 210 HP gross to 140 HP net. The rating changed to include accessories and full exhaust, air cleaner, etc. It's a more realistic rating, and its still used today. They were pretty anemic stock, most modern 4 cyl make more than that, lluckily it's still got the cubes and its not too hard to wake 'em up!
Oh yeah here's my 'source'. I kinda cheated because I made it myself but it all came from Ford lit. http://timeline.maverickgrabber.com
I believe the compression and some other things changed after '72 in addition to the ratings change. Seth
Yea the stock horsepower really isn't anything to write home about at all, especially in the late 70's. Tons of smog stuff, low compression, small cams, catalytic converters. I'll tell you what though, my car felt like it had about 10X as much power with the 302 as it did with the old wheezy 200 I had in it before.
Who knows the whole story, but the only info I have was CR went from 9.0:1 to 8.5:1 from 71 to 72, then down again to 8.0:1 for 1973. It went from 210 gross in 71 to 140 net in 72 to 138 net in 73. So the CR only lost 2 HP for 73 supposedly. I think the 210 gross = 140 net (for the Maverick) comparison is pretty close.
