I noticed that the brake lining on the shoes on my rear brakes are cracked, just 1 or 2 obvious cracks per shoe. Under hard braking one side (I belIeve it is the right side) will lock up. The linings are clean, no fluid on them, new wheel cylinders, no pulsations.

My question is, could these cracks cause my lockup?

Misadjustment is a major cause of lockup. I would replace the shoes, hardware, and have the drums checked for minimum thickness.

The cracked shoes may be related to the lock-up problem. If the brakes ever overheated, it could cause lining cracking and related damage.

Check the Brake Drum for any signs of Bluing - meaning overheated/burnt steel. I've seen smoking red hot rear brakes ruin the drums with blue-burnt areas that apparently distort or roughen and cause grabbing with normal braking friction heat rise.

(... Oops, left emergency brake on again ...)

    have fun

I learned the hard way years ago (non Maverick) that buying cheap brake linings is a bad idea. I now always get the best available.

I actually have a vic rear disc brake setup sitting in the garage...

I recently adjusted the drums (evenly), the drums had no signs of hot spots anywhere on them, not to say that they may not have developed since. (the longest i've accidentally left the parking brake on is 2 blocks, not enough to matter)

Chances are they are El Cheapo shoes, based on the previous owners choices in parts.

I'll get new shoes and hardware and check the drums thickness, hopefully that will fix the problem!

    Thank you all
