Went to the junkyard yesterday looking for parts to finish my v8 swap. I found a 302 in a 1979 tbird. I looked up a few part numbers on rock auto and the 79 tbird a.c compressor and alternator are the same as the 76 Comet. I went ahead and took all the brackets, pulleys, fan/fan spacer off the tbird including the power steering pump. The power steering pump is a different part number. Does anyone know if this pump will be compatible with the other components in the Comets power steering system?
Definitely STAY AWAY from that PS pump. They were junk in those years, half metal/half plastic. They all leaked where the two materials came together. I had a 1980 Cougar. The car was 2 years old at the time and the pump leaked. A mechanic friend told me to put up with it as long as I could stand it, because the replacement was going to be as bad. I would take the pump bracket with you to the parts store, and see if it matches the bolt pattern for a rebuilt pump for your 76 Comet. If it does, then standard hoses should work fine, too.
Funny, pop had a '79 Cougar plus I owned a '79 Monarch & probably a half dozen '78-'82 Fox vehicles, don't remember any of them having a P/S pump leak issue... At least not bad enough to replace... My '88 T-Bird did leak from front seal, the plastic housing was fine... Above said, the replacement metal reservoir pump on my Comet does weep enough to form a drip, never seen any on ground...
That Cougar was short-lived in my experience .... originally belonged to the ex-wife. I got rid of it ASAP after I got it the divorce. Probably why this still generates a pretty strong opinion out of me .... LOL.
Sorry about the reminder...So the tbird brackets need the tbird water pump to bolt onto. I bought a 91 crown vic water pump.. not gonna work. Also thinking the timing chain cover might be worth taking off the junk tbird. Hopefully they haven't already crushed it. Upullandpay
