Found this sreen shot from a Youtube video "100 years of the moving assembly line" as discussed on the Concours Mustang Forum. Mustang guys found it interesting that the front fenders were on prior to paint. Funny I also thought the fenders were painted off the Mavericks. Not sure what the worker is grinding on ?
He's probably bumping a ripple, if it were at top of rear window, I'd say smoothing the joint where top and body come together... All Dearborn('72 & '73 only) & early Mavericks(1970) had fenders painted off the car, as those had black engine compartments... All others the engine compartment is body color.. If fenders were painted on car bolts will be painted as well, otherwise they are natural(as on my Cobra Jet)... Note Dearborn also built Mustang...
The black engine compartment went body colour mid-1971 Model year. Mine was built in October 1970 and has the black engine compartment. I believe it was 74+ that the fenders were ALL painted on the car.
Uhhh I should have known that... Oh well now I don't have to wait till Dec to screw up a perfect year... My Kansas City '71 Comet GT has body color engine compartment(as does my '72)... The one not on line(straight ahead) looks like a Maverick...
What's the build date on your Kansas GT car? I bet it's after January 71... I also believe that the St Thomas cars were the first to switch, and Dearborn was the last.
Yep! Probably sneaked into the COMET line and was placed on the " side " till they could find a spot for it ! Cometized (Chip)
Mystery solved .. They're MAVERICKS .. The exterior end of the taillight panel has two mounting holes that are VERTICAL straight up and down .. The Comets are spaced with the bottom hole in about the same spot as the Maverick , but the upper hole is " inset" more . Dr.Bill has made this astute observation. Cometized (Chip)
At KC & Dearborn Mav and Comet were most likely built on same line one behind other(along with Mustang at Dearborn), no special run of one or other... Here locally before 1973, Norfolk used to build Galaxies & F-100 on same line... In '73 they switched to F-series only...
There's really more than one shot, but this one shows a green Grabber parked beside a Mustang Sprint, plus a ton of other 72 Mavericks!
