Hello All, I have highback buckets out of a 70 0r 71 cougar and i want to recover them and also put new foam, i am looking at 71-73 mustang upholstery and foam so i was wondering is their any difference between 71-73 mustang buckets compared to mav/comet buckets as well as my cougar set Thanks, Kyle
I'm pretty certain the seat frames and foam are the same 71-73 except for the location of the seat back release depending on the year. The 69-70 Mustang/Cougar high backs are different and take a different set of foam. - Matt
Agreeing with the above reply ... if that is a 71-73 seat, identical frame and foam to 71-72 Grabber/GT. 69-70 are a different shape ... don't know how different, never had any. Pics may help verify what you have. Also, look for a stamped metal tag for a part number under the bottom cushion. Part number on it may help ID. It is really common for the captured nuts in the bottom frame to rip out. That can be fixed with a nut welded to a flat washer, which in turn is welded to the hole in frame, nut side up, to maintain the right seat height. Also, it is a knuckle-buster and a test of patience, but the seat release hardware is mounted to the side, you can reverse it to make a passenger side top work on the driver side, or vise-versa. Then you have to get the matching seat back. IIRC, 71 had the release in the center, 72-73 had them moved to the sides. I used an entire 71-73 Mustang Coupe upholstery set and modded the rear seat frame to fit. Very tough to do, and I got lucky with the results. The Mav seat bottom is much taller. Doing it again, I would take the back cover to an upholstery shop and add material to the lower edge to make it fit. The upper cover is about an inch too wide, so that could be narrowed. See page 6 in the thread for these details. You want coupe upholstery if doing the back seat, fastbacks had the fold-down seat ... very different than coupe. Rules out Mach 1 sets, but you could use Standard or Deluxe Coupe.
