Prior to buying the vehicle, the hydraulic hoses were removed. The threads in the backing plate, the connection to the wheel cylinder, is too rusted to screw anything into it.

What's the best way to clean out rust in the threaded area where the hydraulic hose connects to the the backing plate on a 1973 Ford Maverick, 4.1L 250cid L6?

Is there a specific cleaner I should avoid using, just in case it gets into the wheel cylinder?

    Thank You,

If the parts are that rusty I wud try some of those liquid rust disolvers as advertised on TV. In any case, I wud do rebuilt wheel cylinders and any other parts for the system in question. You may have to replace those rusty plates.

there's no threads in the backing plate. Only a hole for the wheel cylinder and mounting bolts to go through. I would replace wheel cylinders if you see rust on threads.

You are correct, it's not part of the backing plate. It's the lower, angled threads in the diagram you posted. Thanks for the response.

Definitely replace the whl cylinders. If the threads are that rusty... The inside of the cyl is just as bad.
