Verrry well said and I totally agree. McToad I would suggest this is where you play parent, direct your son in the direction of getting the body and suspension to driving conditions 1st ... even with help from the forum, drive it around some, and You can determine whether or not you may be wasting your time with this car. I say this because my dad thought I would give up on my '72 Maverick until I bought a 5 lug disc setup for $300, bought 16x7 2005 Mustang GT wheels for it, researched the 8.8 swap and cut down info for a 5 lug disc brake rear end, have been doing what I can do to just get it mobile around the yard and eventually just capable of driving on the road as a " drive-able project" again. Car is 4 lug drum drum, 250 6 cylinder, and much like you & your son I have the same desire for a 302 swapped street cruiser but you want to do it right, have the car around for a while I would assume, and sometimes kids aren't aware of the processes old cars require to become nice or even a decent project car. I'm 32 and it took years of wanting a '72 Maverick since I was 13 yrs old to realize old cars require commitment and hard work just to basically exist let alone to be the great beautiful historical works of art they once were and then to improve them is a whole new learning experience.
yep.. more good advice. Too easy to lose interest when the car doesn't move anymore.. biting off too much at one time, changing cash flow.. and girlfriends easily does that.. and get lost going in other directions when you're younger too.
Okay, need some advice on the Intake, carb and air cleaner. I do not want to have to do anything with the hood. What would be the best option on the 302 install for these? Thanks, Devin
Much appreciated advice. I am working on the suspension and body rust. My son is working on the engine. We are in borrowed "space" so I need to get it back to running. The C4 tranny I am told works with the newer v8 we are putting in. However, can I use the torque converter from it with the v8 bell housing or will I need to get a different one? The flex plate is apparently 160 tooth? (my eyes could be off and it is really 157)
Okay forum, need some help. I am told that I need a 157 flex plate and need to exchange bell housing for v8. I have a C4 that was connected to an inline 6. I am told that the converter will work that I took off of the C4. The dipstick for the tranny is located in the front right? I asume that is considered "case filled" Anyway, in looking at the parts my son ordered, it appears that the bell housing he ordered is "pan filled" what if any problems will that cause? I have started to look for a bell housing that is case filled for the v8, but am having a hard time finding one. Am I not looking in the right places? Thanks in advance for your considerations.
I believe you need a new harmonic balancer to go along with the new flex plate, 157 tooth flex plate is what I have on my 302, which inline 6 is it? If it's a 250 then you can use the same bell housing, the dipstick is at the front right of the tranny just before the bellhousing
Pop Over to Maverick Comet Restoration for Floor pans and Other Items you might need,, and with all The People here on this site,, Building should be easy as Pie.
From my local machinist. I have since found I have a 250 in the car originally. So everything should bolt up fine from the c4 to the 302 we are rebuilding. I did have to search for a 157 tooth 10.5 bolt pattern 50 Oz flex plate though. Luckily found one new for around 60 bucks. Having the C4 rebuilt to work with 302 as I was told it doesn't have the right number of friction plates and clutch plates in it currently.
