Looking for feedback on where to purchase new manual steering gear. I seen this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Fairla...ash=item2336c87e6f:g:7EoAAOSw1S9Wcghl&vxp=mtr They have a 16:1 and a 20:1 anyone purchase this ?? Thanks
Factory manual boxes are 20:1(actually I believe 21:1), only thing I've seen with 16:1 and manual were Shelbys...
i have rebuilt my box myself, with NOS parts, though. the two ratios are for manual and power steering, manual is quicker. the k-code mustangs (and the shelbys?) used the power steering box with manual linkage, which i did, too.
I believe it is the same on the Mavericks/Comets as it was on the Mustangs. The P/S was quick ratio compared to M/S. As it was not true P/S but power assisted, the gear boxes were interchangeable. I recall removing P/S in a 68 Mustang. We just removed the pump, brackets and replaced the drag link with a M/S one. The steering was not pleasant IMO, but you could use headers without problems. So if you want quick ratio M/S, use the gear box from a P/S car.
Steering boxes for Mustang/Cougar are different from Maverick/Comet, these cars use same box as Torino, Fairlane and other intermediates from '67-'71... They can be made to fit but one bolt hole won't line up unless there are some modifications made for mounting..
I will second Roger Rode of Rode's Restorations. Good guy, and he does quality work. (419) 468-5182 When you contact Roger, say that you have the second core steering box. He might knock down the price a little. Make sure that you remove your Pitman Arm and hardware, prior to sending your core to whom ever though.
