i scored a 58 ford 9 inch car rear end ,wanting to put it under my 72 grabber. will the maverick brakes work on it? will my drivesahft need any mods? im running 15x8 aluma stars with 4 inch backspace and a 1/4 spacer to keep the tires from rubbing the leaf springs. will my wheels fit better with the slightly wider 9 inch,and finally what gear ratios did they come with.as i havent went to pick this rear up yet,i didnt ask what gears was in it
Dunno on fitment but '58 Ford came with ratios between 2.69 & 4.11, depends on what engine & trans combo was installed...
The rear end has tapered axle tubes so you will need smaller Ubolts. Your shock plates will need to be filled and redrilled for the Ubolts. 9" pinion sticks out more than an 8" so you will need to measure how much to cut from driveshaft.
I had a 58 9" in one of my Mavericks and I ran a 8" wide rim with 4 1/2" backspacing on it (old Chrysler Imperial wheel), it was a close fit but worked with no rubbing but you had to jack car up by frame to get it on you could not just stick the jack under the rearend to lift it. Like rthomas says about driveshaft is correct but I did not have to cut any on the driveshaft. Depending on what yoke is on the rearend will determine if you will need to change to different size u joint I just bought 2 u joints and took caps off of one side and put on the other as only the diameter of the cap was different. Your brake backing plates may work depending on if it is a big bearing or small bearing housing on the axle tube of the 9" I found it was interesting that the axles on the 9" were actually smaller in diameter than the 8" beyond the splines and would interchange from 8" to 9" with small bearings. I had a person who was doing a Cruise Oregon event that had broke an axle on a 9" buy a 8" axle from me and it fit right in
The 9 inch third members from 1958 should be the WAR case variety. Very weak design, I would not use it. Up until mid-1967, the housings have the oil fill plug on the rear of the case. Like Jeff indicated there are different length yokes. Most car yokes are 1310 sized, trucks typically are 1330 yokes. I had a '58 Fairlane with the 300Hp 352 Interceptor, that rear withstood numerous neutral drops(hey I was 18)... Those early rears also had the case fill, like the late units... Fill on back of housing was from approx '60 through '66 or mid '67 as you stated... I broke the spider gears in a '57 with a 292, doing neutral drops and also a axle, case was fine(hey I was 17)... The replacement was from a '63½ so had to be filled from the axle tube... EDIT... Now that I think about it the '63½ rear was likely already installed when I broke the axle...
do u guys know if my maverick 8 inch rear drum brakes wil fit on the 58 9 inch the 58 rear should be the small bearing and th e8 inch of course has small bearing axles
shouuld be able to use my maverick drivesaft and universal joints if they both have the 1310 yoke right ??? might have to shorten the shaft ,also another question will my u-joints and shock mounts fit this 58 9 inch without mods,some say no ,some say yes
The u joint used on a rear u joint on a Maverick is sort of a cross breed, the caps that go in the drive shaft are 1 1/16" and the caps that go on the yoke are 1 1/8" a regular 1310 u joint is 1 1/16" on all four corners so be aware of that when you go to hook onto the 9" as it may be either the 1 1/16" or the 1 1/8". Usually if you go to a parts house they will try and sell you the incorrect part. You will have to modify your shock plates as rthomas mentioned above and get new u bolts, I am betting that the brake plates will fit
i can get the shock plates from the 58 ford donar car ,can i just use these plates instead of modifing mine?
The shock plates from the 9" may not be set up for staggered shocks other than that and the correct u bolts you would be good to go.
I dunno if all '58 rears were small bearing, one from a big block may be different from grandma's 6cyl... Definitely by by mid '60s the larger engines were using large axle bearings...
i finally got the rear end home, it has a 3.10 gear ratio,also think i tmight be posi also.when u turn the yoke by hand both axles turn in the same direction,not sur eif thats how to check for posi or not bu i do know all peg leggs ive had they turned in different directions it looks a thought the spring perched are gonna work and my maverick drum brakes im pretty sure are gonna work,i am gonna have to change the yoke and use the u-bolts and shock brackets from the 58 ford
