Always had this problem but it's starting to get really annoying. When pumping gas, some pumps will almost instantly shut off or overflow out the back of the car. some you can pump really slowly and it'll be fine. This is particularly annoying because im in NJ and other people pump gas. It's hard to get them to let me pump it. Is this fixable? are all mavericks like this at gas pumps due to an old filler neck design??
Check your roll over valve (vent valve) on the tank to make sure it's not stopped up. Should be the hose that comes up front to the vapor can. See if you can pass air both ways through it.
Is that the only vent tube? I no longer have a vapor can, i know the line is still running up to there though..
I think that there is a tube in the tank that comes up to where the filler neck hooks on but it stops there. They were trying to stop venting to the air from filling and also changing to non vented filler caps with only a pressure release.
Mine did the same thing for years. When I pulled the tank, I removed the vent. It was completely plugged. I could not find a way to clean it. Maybe just the pipe is plugged on yours. I went EFI with a pump in the tank. It had a new vent valve. I can fill the tank with the nozzle wide open without any backflow. It is possible that some of the NOS parts houses may have one. Micah
Micah- were you able to used a stock EFI pump and housing, or something aftermarket? I have EFI and my pump is a noisy external one.
Just took a look under the car, I'm not entirely sure of how they set this up. The supply line is coming from the sending unit and goes to an external pump. The return line goes to the front of the tank, where there are two ports, the return is in one, and the other I assume is the line to the vapor canister. Why are there two ports on the front of the tank?
Phil, Look at my Showcase post. There are pictures in there of the tank and lines as well as info on the pump I used. Mciah
Okay I tested the vent tube line at the tank, it is quite hard to suck air through it. It also feels like there is a one way valve in there so that you cant blow air back into it. I assume i have to lower the tank to attempt to clean it out (if i even can)? I'm also considering pouring some sort of fuel system cleaner in there to see if it'll help....
