what does everybody recomend on leaf springs? i want a good pair of quality leaf springs? now are the ones from jc whitney too stiff? the 4 leaf? im unsure what to buy
Myself and others here have used the JC Whitney 4-leafs with good results. Others have used ESPO parts, some have complained that they raise the rear too high, others had no problem.
I used ESPO and I love the ride but hated the height. Mine used to look like Dans. I took them to a spring shop and had them dearched.
Its definitely a stiffer ride but its hard to compare. You usually end up replacing 30 yr old worn springs with new ones, so there is going to be a difference. You'd have to buy new 3 leafs and try them, then replace with new 4 leafs to get a fair comparison.
The bumps and imperfections in the road will definitely be more noticeable with the 4-leaf. The ones I got from JC Whitney did not raise the back up high...
I have the ESPOs and plan on having them dearched. How does that work? Do you tell them how much or is it a guessing game?
I just measured how much further down I wanted them and told the shop. When I got them back and installed them, the right side was about 3/4" higher than the left. So I pulled that one back out and took it back. Second time it was dead on. It only cost $20 and no charge for the return trip. You can take your whole car to them but that will cost considerably more to have them r&r the springs.
i have the JCW 4 leaf. i had them on my (M.A.V.) '71 they stood it on it's nose. i put them on my '73 and it sits level... . i cut the front coil 1 round to get the rear higher than the front ...frank...
todd has the 4 leaf from espo. between them and kyb shocks, the car is a kidney pounder.. the springs along with the shocks made a HUGE difference in the way the car handles. we kinda got used to the stiff ride. lots better than "handling like a ford"
Has anyone ever had set made? I know there is a company named Deavers in California that made the leafs for the back of my Ranger and it changed the ride 100%,they put a military wrap on their leafs so in case a leaf breaks you still have a spring holding you up and it really helps with axle wrap also. And they use a bunch of little thin leaves instead of thick ones to give them a more progressive rate. The ones on the Ranger cost $500 so they dont come cheap but may be what you are looking for.
correct me if i am wrong gang, but if you don't like the lift of your new springs, for a lot less hassle, can't you just buy a lowering kit? you know... has them spacers? then as the springs settle, if they settle too low, just remove the spacers? better than removing the whole stinkin set of springs right?
