My 77 Mav coil has "for use with external resistor only" printed on it. So where is the resistor? I see no physical attachment. What am I missing?

Is it the coil-to-distributor wire, or one of the wires to the two small terminals?

If it's the coil-to-distributor wire, is it available at auto parts stores? I bought a set of wires at Autozone, and I don't think there is any resistance built into my set.

    Thanks! I appreciate your help!

Sorry I Should Have Specified ,the Small Hot Wire From Ignition Switch To The Coil Is The Resister Wire ,not The Little One Going To The Dist. As Far As Your Plug Wires They Will Work Ok.
    Hope This Helps,

Steven, I have seen this to messing around with old cars in my grandpa's field and often wondered what it meant.

Basically what your saying is the "resistor" IS the positive wire comeing in from the ignition switch (or where ever it comes from).

My dad did the tubbing in our garage. The rearend and suspension was installed with help from my dad's friend Brad who I believe worked/works for Mustangs Unlimited.

As for how much, I'll have to ask my dad when he gets home from work tonight.

The car had Hedman Headers, not sure exactly which ones. The tubes of the headers stopped about half the lenghth of the transmission. There wasn't much ground clearence, but as long as we avoided speed bumps in parking lots, we were ok.

I will have specs on the car up on my site soon. I gotta get my scanner working first.

Steven, do you have any idea where I could get a replacement wire for the "resistor wire? Ford? Autozone? Napa?

Not Really Sure, Did Yours Burn Up? Honestly On My Car When I Had Points I Ran Strait 12volts To Mine ,but It Tends To Burn Up The Point A Little Quicker, If You Want You Could Run Regular Wire From Switch And Install A Factory Gm Balast Resistor In Line, All Stores Should Have These.

I may be wrong but I do think that they quit using the resistor wire when they started using the DS I and DS II ignition systems .

I thing this is the resister for the coil...

Elliot Is Right I Didn't Note Your Electronic Ign. I Refered To Points System The External Capacitor Or Condensor Is What Was Used Later.

I think the condensor was used for radio noise suppression only. The electronic ignition system needs a full 12 volts therefore no resistor wire. the earlier point type systems had a resistance type wire that reduced incoming voltage down to around 5 volts to prevent burning the points.

Thanks guys. I bought a 1 ohm resistor at Radio Shack, and installed it per my wiring diagram. I thought that was the reason it wouldn't start, but that has been ruled out now.

I took the 302 out of the Mav to put it into another car. I took the entire Duraspark system out, and reassembled it. I did a major overhaul, replacing cam, springs, valves, pushrods and tappets. All were Edelbrock brand, and nothing extreme. I also put in a new starter with a high torque model, and replaced the distributor with a new/rebuilt OEM distributor from O'Reilly Auto.

The motor turns easily, with a strong spark, strong smell of gas, good compression in all cylinders, and the timing is right on. Problem is it won't even backfire for me. I pulled every plug, and turned the motor while checking every cyl for compression. Every spark plug showed a good spark too. It's almost as if I put in the plugs, and they stop sparking. Any input would be appreciated. I'm stumped, any suggestions???
