I was installing new carpeting and noticed the yellow box behind the dash under the radio. Looks like some type of electronics or relay, has a harness coming out of it. Just curious what it is.
1974 only - seat belt interlock Here is a thread (one of many on the forum) - http://mmb.maverick.to/threads/yellow-box-removal-seat-belt-interlock-delete.102201/ Hope this helps ...........
ok thats interesting. My system is still all there then with overide button in the engine compartment too. However the car starts just fine with or without the belts fastened, I did notice someone unplugged the seat sensors under the seat. Seems strange though that it could be disabled that easily. It would be nice to leave it the way it is (disabled) but somehow get the seatbelt warning light to come on momentarily when the key is turned on as a reminder only.
I'm not that familiar with the system to know if just unplugging the sensor defeats it, but it would not surprise me. Ford only installed the system to comply with Federal safety mandates. If it was good enough for the Feds - it was good enough for Ford.
I don't think car will start with the seat(s) unplugged, additional mods are required... If I remember correctly, the bulletin for disable shows connecting a couple of wires on connector together...
I'll have to take a look at the override switch and see if the two wires are jumpered as shown in the bulletin diagram that is posted on here, they probably are and maybe the previous owner also unplugged the seat sensors to turn off the light and buzzer as well? Maybe I will plug them back in to see.
My 78 Mustang II had that interlock, became an issue later on... There was evidence of wire cutters and electrical tape, but it was understandable,t-top car with velour seats = fried electrics... Good luck
