That's a reasonable thought... Since Dearborn was "the Mustang" plant, it's possible some procedures used for Maverick mirrored those of Mustang...

From the pages of -- " More Than You Ever Wanted To Know"

Torinos built at San Jose had upper cowl painted black, at the three other plants it was body color... Prior to adding intermediates, San Jose had been a Mustang/Cougar plant only, those have black painted cowls... Intermediates added because KC received the nod to assemble the new Maverick... Switch point to Maverick was approx second week March '69...

Argent makes the bumper look even bigger than it is.

In looking at all the pictures I have, plus all my parts car pictures, I don't see any factory front stone guards that were body color.

From the '72 brochure - unless it just a reflection - sure looks blue to me.

I imagine painting them Argent or Black versus Body Colour lent itself to better economics and lower cost/time on the assembly line. IIRC, that was the whole reason behind dropping the Grabber hoods (they were painted separate from the bodies and often cars ended up with flat hoods and then had to be held up in QC until the Grabber hood was painted and then installed).

The other thing to remember with brochures is that they almost always precede the actual building of the model year. If you look at the Grabber in the 1972 brochure, it actually still shows the 1971 hood blackout, not the two-piece hood blackout that actually made it into production.

I agree with Paul about the brochures coming out pre-production. One can't really trust the info/pictures in the brochures.

Agree ...... the brochures are definitely using cars that have been primped and polished beyond anything coming off the assembly line.

Still wonder about my '72 Dearborn car. I'm sure that car was never repainted and that one was tan, same as the car.

My 73 has a white/cream colored stone guard. It’s laying around somewhere...

When I tucked my front bumper I painted the stone guard black. With other things black I think it looks good this way. Misc. Car Pictures 019.jpg
