Like an idiot I forgot to put this in behind the timing cover. Is it needed or can I skip it? I glued in the new seal on thw cover if that matters.
It's sort of a slinger that tosses some oil back onto timing chain. Also creates a barrier so excessive oil isn't splashed onto seal, maybe leading to a leak(new seal should handle it OK). I'd want it in there but for a engine that's only a temporary, probably won't know the difference.
Thanks. I assumed it was kind an oil barrier to keep the seal from being flooded after I thought about why it was in that spot. I just now pulled the cover back off and slipped it back in. I gotta be more aware lol.
Early timing covers used the slinger, later covers had a "shelf" above the seal that cut down on the amount of oil running down onto the seal.
Been there, done that, got the t-shirt & hat. You did the correct thing by taking the cover back off and rectifying your mistake. You’d be surprised how many people would have just thrown the slinger in the trash then complained about the pice of crap seal when it prematurely leaked.
