    Hi !

I ordered a steering wheel, that goes really nice in the maverick (my thinking ). The installation kit is from the different manufacturer. Horn has only 1 plug and I have 2 wires.

My question is, that can I weld a plug in back on the horn, as a ground connection ? Does it work ? Or will my car explode ?
I have no clue about car electronics :biglaugh:

    Thanks guys !

If you touch those 2 wires together, does the horn sound? Will it sound if only 1 wire is touched to the wheel to ground it? If only 1 wire sounds it, that is the 1 to go to the button.

In looking at the picture, I'm thinking both wires are needed to sound the horn. That would be normal and you would need to get the proper horn button or modify what you have so it doesn't short to ground.

In the old Ford's, full amperage to sound the horn goes through the horn button. Not an issue with a stock horn but it can be an issue with aftermarket parts getting shorted out causing the horn to sound when you don't want it to. Fix for this is installing a relay at the horn and using the horn button as just a trigger circuit for the relay. The low current draw now at the button makes it much easier to get a stable working button.

I would 100% recommend going to a relay at the horn. And if you do that upgrade, it makes it very easy to install a dual Hi/Lo horn set which is way better to have then the single stock horn.

Unfortunately, 70's Ford horns run from B+ from the column (horn is grounded and needs 12 V to sound). Only isolated switch will work AFAIK . I had ordered correct version 5 months ago but back-ordered from Mfg at all usual major vendors (Grant #3249) . Summit has alternate : https://www.summitracing.com/parts/gtx-10-6009

I did add a relay so only small current needed to trigger from column button.

    have fun

That button could be made to work BUT, will require some wiring changes.

    1) disconnect(cut) power wire to horn contact at base of steering column.
2)install relay, connecting trigger coil(terminals 85 & 86) to the now two ends of wire(s) just cut in step 1
3)at steering wheel, connect horn button to wire(contact) that relay was just connected, clip off/disconnect ground wire
4)connect power to switching contact of relay, can be from same source that was cut in step 1(contact 30)
5)connect the wire that normally powers horn(second contact in column) to output of relay.(Contact 87)
    6) if relay has terminal 87B, ignore it.

With these changes the horn button will trigger relay, which in turn powers horn.
