im here in california and the rains have done their job. on my 71 grabber my windshield is leaking bad. i need a new windshield anyways as it is bad. now ive heard all kinds of things like they only make the original weatherstripping for it but they make a new windshield that is thinner glass and wont fit it. what do i do? do i just go to a glass place or order it from somewhere and have it installed? im really lost as to what to do. especially with the weatherstrip question. if anyone can help id really appreciate it. mike
i also have a new windshield and gasket...got my glass from my local glass shop...got the gasket from A/K.some say they have a prob. finding the glass, but no prob. here...frank...
I also have an a/k gasket, and new thinner windsheild. my buddy owns the glass shop. When we put it in I was worried about it .he pumped a little of this black really sticky gooey stuff with a calking gun, around inside of the gasket on window side.then put the gasket on to window .then put window into car . so far its great and the cars outside alot. long winded but I hope this helped .
Local glass shop: 'yeah, I think that we may have one in the back, been moving it around for a while now.' They came out and installed it on top of that. Cost? I don't know. My other half surprised me with that for Christmas-she told me the story about the guy at the glass shop. Seth
I did the same thing new weatherstrip from A/K and new glass. I glass shop does older cars. What the maverick faces is just like the mustangs same setup. They pump alot of the stuff in and water test. I have had some problems with it but I just keep going back and they take care of it no charge.
So your not putting the cart before the horse - are you sure it is the seal? Are you actually seeing water at the seal leaking in or is your floor just getting soaked? If it's just the floor, you probably have a leaking cowl. I've seen that a lot more then a bad gasket seal.
I also have a front glass rubber from Autokrafters, along with a new front glass from AGS(local auto glass shop). No problems at all.
thank you all! now i dont have to worry. no its not the cowl. i made sure that was ok when i restored the car. the only thing i didnt do was the windshield. and it leaks while i drive and it drips on my lap and legs. no mistake about that. i can see it dribbling out the rubber seal. and its crusty. its a lousy w/s anyhow as it has nicks all over it. thank you everyone now ill get that ak seal and scout out some cool glass shops in the area. mike
It sounds like the windshield was improperly installed. Many, if not most, installers today have no idea what is about installing old style gasket windshields. The sill has to be completely clean and the gasket must be installed carefully or they'll leak. With modern production lines as they are, all there has to be is one small flaw in the new gasket and it'll leak. Ask any plumber...water is insidious. It'll find any miniscule route to move from one place to another. When I had mine replaced in the PoliceMav, the installer familiar with older style windshields, put a small bead of urethane on the sill before he seated the new windshield. It has never leaked a drop. He told me that he has had experiences with older car retrofits leaking for a variety of reasons and his fix seemed to work 100% of the time after he started doing it. I know you don't want to hear this, but I think it'll have to be reinstalled. By the way, I paid $150 installed. I supplied the gasket. My shop I deal with can get them. I don't understand why some shops cannot unless they just do not want to deal with older cars and gasket windshield installations. That may be a big part of it.
yeah ill just have to go to the part of town that poor people are in as it seems they still respect the old cars. thanks again as i will make sure the person installing it knows about the urethand bead. mike
