Is anyone familiar with or have any opinions on the 1971 Comet GT currently for sale at USA Hot Cars in San Ramon, California?
I don't know this particular car but it looks pretty nice. At least this dealer puts up some decent photos. Marti report proves it is a GT 1971 Mercury Comet GT Stock # 23002 for sale near San Ramon, CA | CA Mercury Dealer (myhotcars.com)
If you are on Facebook you should check with these guys, one of them is probably familiar with the car. Looks like a nice car but for 30k they could have at least splurged for a dash cap! https://www.facebook.com/groups/1861543307313189/
What's not to like about the car except the price, $30k is a lot of money but you could buy a lesser car and spend more to make it as nice as this one
Thanks, I thought it was pretty nice too. I do see that it needs a dash pad and there are two small patches on the driver's side interior door panel near the window crank. Auto Krafters lists both in their catalog. I do see that the Marti Report shows that the car was originally delivered to a dealer in California but was actually sold at a dealer in Wyoming. Maybe a dealer swap. The car was previously offered for sale at a dealer in Detroit for $24,900.00 but I don't know for sure how long ago that may have been but I think it was fairly recently. With all that being said, you your opinion what do you think would be a fair offer for the car? Thanks for your thoughts.
Wanna what I think? Dealer making a flip. For outside condition the trunk area is gross, a couple hour detail would make a huge difference(tells me they are trying not to invest any money in it). Dash pad, already mentioned. If the engine hasn't been rebuilt, it's no doubt getting tired. Bottom of bell housing appears to have been wiped just before pict taken, probably has leak from rear main seal. Power steering cylinder wet, no doubt it has some leakage(also common issue). The brake line on rear end has been replaced with copper, may not cause issue but is a bit soft for brake system. Still has it's orig front drum brakes, sorta OK but won't have the stopping power of disc.
Something weird there, almost like Marti stubbed his toe. It has a DSO of 51 which is Denver, Wyoming in that district. If it was delivered to CA the DSO should be 52...
One other thing, was the underhood area on these cars body color such as this one is, or black. I had two '71 Comet GT's back in the late 70's that I know were original, both were red and the inner fender area under the hood was black. But I also bought a '72 Maverick new that was blue and the inner fender area under the hood was body color on that car.
Engine bay color depends on year & where it was assembled. What I've seen, the '70 were all black, '71 were body color, '72 & '73 built at Dearborn were black. All other plants and years, body color.
I don't remember which plants that my 2 red '71 GT's were assembled, but I do know that the underhood areas on both were black. My wife bought a '71 GT new in yellow from a dealer in Baltimore, MD. The underhood area was also black. My '72 Maverick, also purchased new from a dealer in Baltimore was blue with the underhood area also being blue.
Was the underside on these cars body color such as this one or something else, or did it depend on which assembly plant that the car was produced?
