I`m *trying* to put a dual roller timing set in my mothers '85 E150 with a 302. So far I have got everything off but the timing chain cover. I have removed all the bolts but it still won`t come off . Could y`all give me some tips on this before I take a BFH to it.

2 of the oil pan bolts on each side of the pan go into the front cover. You will need to drop the pan down a little to get the cover off. If this is carburated I assume you removed the fuel pump.

The old bolts in the oil pan got another one. I remember when that happened to me.

Yup , I have removed the fuel pump , the 4 oil pan bolts , the two that were hidden at the top by the dist and water neck but that sucker is still on there.

Darn , will I need a new oil pan gasket ?

time to get out the dynamite:evilsmile

or maybe try a dead blow and lightly tap it all around, they can get pretty snug after years of use

I know it took me an hour to get my water pump off after I loosened all the bolts...

You figure its been on there 15'ish years, its comfortable.

you don't have to drop the pan at all. I've never ever dropped the pan on a timing chain swap. change the balancer seal, it's cheap insurance.

Age and or gasket glue has set in. Also if it is an 85, should have two dowels in the block that the cover sits on, for alignment. May have to use a wedge of sorts, like a stiff narrow putty knife blade etc. Also try using a prybar between the intake and cover to see if it will come loose. Careful prying at different points should get it started off the dowels. Loosen a couple more pan bolts back too, this will take some more pressure off the front. Your gasket kit should have two small cork gaskets that are used on the front of the pan when replacing the cover. Glue them to the clean surface and then put a little vaseline on top to help slide the cover back on. Make sure all the gasket surfaces are clean before using new one's, if not, they will leak and the whole job will have to be done over. Patient's and perserverance should get it loose(along with a few choice words).

double check that you have all the bolts out, including the one under the timing tab on some setups. these things just arent that hard to get off, even after 15 years. get the short ones at the top near the intake, behind the water pump top lip?

Yup , they were real fun. I had to take the water neck off and unbold the dist to turn it out of the way .

I can`t get by with that kind of stuff , I`ll end up with a torque wrench over my head  .

Would a pocket knife work ?

Okay , I`ll try , its not all that easy with that big old K member in the way .

Thanks for all of the advice y`all , I`m gonna go get after it again here purdy soon  .

the only thing i can say is the timing chain cover is sitting on two pins that hold it on place and align it up......it could be stuck there......and you dont want to pry on it because that could break the alignment pins off.... take a small tip screw driver or a putty kniofe and work it around the hole cover to see if it comes out....

hell...you might as well just take all the bolts off the front of the engine....

    good luck
