I bought a used Hurst V Matic shifter off of Ebay for my Comet. It came with the cable, no brackets. The C-4 I plan on using has the linkage pointing up, it came out of a collum shift car. I need somebody to refresh my memory on how to reverse it so that it points down to use the cable floor shifter. Also, does anybody know if the mounting braket that bolts to the trans pan can be bought new or do I just need to fab one up? I've seen the ones for a B&M in the summit catalog, maybe I missed the Hurst ones? Or will the B&M brackets work with the Hurst?

shifter cables are pretty much universal, so the B&M one should work. is the shift arm not held on by a bolt? can u see one? if it is, I believe they are on c4's, you can remove the bolt, pull the arm off, and flip it. I think that's what I did with my 351W/C4 Mustang ll. I used a v matic 2.

I can't remember but I think you are right. I know the kickdown is on the outside with the shift lever behind that........I can't remember if the shift linkage piece is notched for the shaft or if it goes into the tranny, I'll have to look again tommorrow in daylight.

The shift arm is does not remove that easily. It is attached to the shaft that runs into the trans. You have to drop the pan and remove the valve body to get at the nut that holds it on.

Mavaholic is right, must remove the pan and VB, then use a 7/8th's wrench on the nut to loosen it. Once removed from the detent lever, you can flip it over, aligning the flat spots on the shaft with the detent lever again. Is a bit tricky to get the pieces all back in position but if you study how they are on at disassembly, it will not be to bad. Be sure and get the lever and aligned in the manual shift valve properly, as well as the kickdown lever in the slot in the VB. Hope this helps, by the way , have plenty of rags and oil dry as this is a messy job to say the least. Also, depending on age, may want to change the shift shaft seal and the kickdown lever O-ring. They are notorious for leaking and making those little spots on the garage floor etc.

Thats kinda what I remembered. I did this several years ago on Mustang I helped a friend build but you know what they say about getting older.....the memory goes first :hmmm: . I'm planning on putting in a shift kit anyway, sounds like that will be the time to change the linkage while its all apart anyway. Right now the tranny sits in the carport in the dry waiting on me to get started on it.........That is if I can find it again under all the junk piled in there! Gotta do that spring cleaning thing real soon.

Ya I shoulda figured that, I had to drop the pan on my C6 to remove the arm for my aftermarket B&M arm. I haven't messed with small block stuff in years, I kind of miss it. But I would like to put a C4 behind my 460, mostly cuz everyone tells me it'll never live. That's what they said about my rear diff too. It still works...
